I am not sure this old wives's tale is 100% aaccurate, but the explanation goes like this.
During the day when you are up on your feet, the disks between your vertebra (spinal bones) which are a gelatinous material are compressed and loose water. While you are sleeping the compression is removed allowing the disks to rehydrate and re-expand. You are not actually growing and shrinking.

Hair is supposed to grow 1/2 an inch a month on average. I did a test once to see how fast my hair would grow. I shaved my head with a trimmer, then with a razor.
My hair grew exactly 1 inch in 35 days-a little bit longer than a month and almost twice as fast as average statistics. I have thick red hair that curls after about 2 inches, soft texture, and I am a male. Maybe that has something to do with it.
