It’s big, bright, fast, beautiful and did I mention it’s big? I mean two side-by-side magnified A4 documents big. The $1100 price is great too compared to other 30″ models.
The reason why this monitor is considered obsolete by Dell is the complaints from videophiles about its lack of connectivity options. Specifically, dual-link DVI is the only way in. So, if you are planning on connecting game machines or BlueRay drives or HD cable boxes via HDMI, you are out of luck. But, why would you want to do that? Even full HD video only goes up to 1920×1080. This monitor does 2560×1600. It makes a lot more sense to pay $800 for a 42″ 1080p LCD TV, which is bigger and better for viewing video anyway. This is an ultra-high-resolution monitor, pure and simple, and I love it for doing a good job there.

As the channel runs low on stock of this monitor, the Gateway XHD3000 30″ Widescreen HD LCD Monitor becomes a better value. The latter, however, does not employ the S-IPS panel from LG, which is generally considered the best and most expensive LCD technology as of 2008. This is another reason why some 30″ monitors are still a good buy in my mind even though 24″ models are selling for under $300 nowadays. Those cheap monitors use TN panels, with poor color, contrast and viewing angles. Smaller S-IPS monitors (e.g. HP LP2475W 24in LCD Monitor 1920X1200 and Planar PX2611W 26-Inch Widescreen Digital/Analog with Height Adjust Stand (Black)) still cost $600+ and are becoming scarcer by the day due to the competition from its cheaper cousins. Even Samsung, which holds the patents for the middling S-PVA technology, has been introducing TN models.

Some monitors have a swivel mount that lets you arrange them vertically, but they are usually at the expensive end of the range. Obviously yours doesn't have that feature, so you'll have to find some way to prop it up vertically. Make sure that you provide adequate ventilation, as monitors designed for horizontal use might have vents designed to work only in that position.
If you're going to change orientations a lot, you'd be better off buying a monitor that has the swivel mount.

For what you are talking about, there really arn't a lot of things that I can think of that would fit for what you want. One I can think of is response time. This will impact the time you have to react to situations in games so the lower the response time the better. I would go for somewhere around 8 milliseconds or lower. Other than that, there really isn't much that fits what you want. Brightness and contrast, stuff like that doesn't really make a difference because they are all about the same and can be adjusted anyway. If you want higher quality go for a DVI monitor instead of VGA, but once again a game will work just as good on VGA so this really isn't a big deal, but is better for the occasional movie.
One thing that you might look at is whether or not the screen is protected with a glass coating. If it is, there will often be a glare where there would not be if you didn't have the glass. If you want to touch the monitor a lot, get the glass, if not, then don't. I have a non glass one and have had no problems except the occasional friend that pokes it and it messes with the color. Just be careful.
Other than these things, I can't think of anything that will be a big deal for gaming. All monitors come with certain resolutions that games support so no big deal here either. I have a basic LCD that I use for games and have no problems with it, everything works great! Basically, pick the monitor you want, it should work good.

It depends on what you want to do with your LCD. If your looking to get more desktop space then the 20" if the you want a bigger view the 22". I have however seen newer 22" with simular specs as the dell ultra sharp 22" ( 1680×1050) compared to the 20" (1600×1200). The 22" has the 5ms response compared to the 16ms for the 20". plus i would rather get the 22" just in case i want to watch a movie. the bigger the screen the better..
