Dell 30 Inch Monitor Or Two 20 Inch Monitors?

i'm a music producer looking to increase my productivity and i can't decide if i want a dual-monitor setup or a 30 inch. my new mac pro will have an insane graphics card (512 vram) so resolution's not a problem.

You must change the power option "when I close the lid of my laptop" to DO NOTHING.
It's in the Control Panel / Power.
DX 11 will still hardly be used, as games companies keep developing for PS3 and Xbox360, and then port to the PC.

You may have to update your "display" driver if the problem continues. This may or may not be a "bad" connection problem. There's something else you can try. You won't be able to see what's happening on the screen because it's all blacked out, but there is something going on, you just gotta believe! Press the Windows Key + R. This brings up the Run Command. You can't see it, but it's there. Type cmd. This opens the command prompt. Now hit Alt + Enter. This puts the screen into "text only" mode. This will reset your screen so you can see it. Now type "Exit" to leave the command prompt, and you should be back to normal. If this doesn't work the first time, run through it 2 or 3 times before you give up and call the "Geek Squad". Good luck!
No, back in the old days when it was tube I would say yes but with the new monitors there are no problems and it makes the images look better too!

What they are suggesting is not dual displays, but using a monitor instead of the laptop screen.
You need to go to your display properties, and tell it to use the screen as a second monitor. I do this in Windows XP by right clicking on a 'blank' spot on the desktop, and choosing properties. You can also get there through control panel. Check out the link below.

I have found that multitasking with two monitors side by side looks terrible if they're not the exact same brand and model.

Samsung LCDs have never let me down. I've had a 17inch 730B for several years now and the performance still wows me.

Run one to the DVI and one to the VGA ports on the back of your computer. If you do not have a monitor with a DVI input you can get an inexpensive converter (check Newegg.com for cheap ones or Best Buy if your in a hurry but they will charge a lot more).
You will then need to go into your graphics card settings and tell it to output to 2 monitors. There are a lot of settings in there (do you want the screen to appear the same on both, do you want it to be like one big monitor etc.) so play around with it for a while until you get it all figured out. Being that you have an HP these settings will probably be under something call Nvidia, although it could be ATI if you have a weird setup.
If you only want the same picture on two screens there are VGA “splitters” that can accommodate that. But the image will be the same, no exceptions, on both monitors.
